High-Speed Door vs Rolling Shutter Door: Which One Does Your Opening Need?

What this guide covers
A tripod turnstile arm that fails to return to its home position is one of the most common service calls in pedestrian access control — and one of the most misdiagnosed. The instinct is to blame the controller. In our field experience, the root cause is mechanical far more often than electrical.
Mechanical causes first
Start with the return mechanism itself. Insufficient spring tension is the leading cause: return springs fatigue over hundreds of thousands of cycles, and an arm that once snapped home crisply begins to stop a few degrees short. Bearing resistance comes next — dust, moisture or dried lubricant in the hub bearings adds drag the spring was never sized to overcome. Then check for debris in the mechanism: ticket stubs, cable ties and even insects have all jammed tripod heads we've serviced. Finally, verify arm alignment — a bent or mis-seated arm drags against the housing and never centers.
Electrical causes
If the mechanism moves freely by hand, look at the electrics in this order: the position sensor (a dirty or misaligned sensor reports the wrong home position), the solenoid (weak pull-in leaves the arm between detents), then wiring, power supply and controller. Intermittent faults that appear only at peak hours often trace to a power supply sagging under load rather than any logic fault.
The isolation sequence
- Isolate power and lock out the lane before touching the head.
- Check for mechanical resistance — rotate the hub by hand; it should move smoothly with even spring return.
- Confirm the return mechanism — inspect spring tension and mounting, clean and re-lubricate bearings.
- Test electrical signals in sequence — sensor output, solenoid actuation, then controller logic.
Preventing recurrence
Most repeat failures disappear with a maintenance schedule: quarterly cleaning of the tripod head, annual spring-tension checks, and bearing lubrication per the manual. Specifying sealed bearings and a rated cycle count matched to the site's traffic at purchase time prevents the majority of these calls entirely.
Pengrong tripod turnstiles are factory cycle-tested before shipment, and every unit ships with a maintenance schedule matched to its rated duty. Ask our engineers about the right model for your traffic level.
