Why a Tripod Turnstile Arm Does Not Return to Its Home Position

What this guide covers
High-speed doors and rolling shutter doors look similar from a distance — both close big openings fast. They solve different problems. Choosing wrong means paying for speed you don’t need, or missing a fire rating the building code requires. Here is how our engineers tell them apart.
What each door is for
A high-speed door is an interior logistics door: its job is to open and close hundreds of times a day while keeping conditioned air in and dust, insects and noise out. A rolling shutter door is a security and fire-compartment door: its job is to lock down an opening — a shopfront at night, a warehouse fire compartment — and in our fireproof models, to hold back fire and smoke for ≥3 hours.
Speed: 0.6–1.2 m/s vs 2–7.5 m/min
High-speed doors run at 0.6–1.2 m/s (frequency-converter controlled) — the curtain is open only seconds per cycle. Rolling shutters move at 2–7.5 m/min: deliberately slower, because their job is secure closure, not traffic flow. If forklifts cross the opening all day, you need the high-speed door. If the opening closes once in the evening, the shutter wins.
Sealing & environment
High-speed doors seal with double-sided brushes and an elastic PVC bottom that adapts to uneven floors — thermal, dust, insect, odor and sound insulation for food plants, cold storage and cleanrooms. Rolling shutters seal against wind and weather with a steel curtain; the priority is intrusion resistance, not air tightness.
Fire rating
This is the decisive line: our steel fireproof rolling shutters carry a fire resistance limit of ≥3 hours with smoke-proof sealing — a code requirement for fire compartments in malls, warehouses and high-rises. PVC high-speed doors are not fire rated. Where the building code demands compartmentation, the shutter is the only choice.
Cost & maintenance
A rolling shutter is the simpler, lower-cost machine: a steel curtain, a motor, guides. A high-speed door adds frequency-converter drive, safety edges (infrared + airbag), and sealing systems that need periodic adjustment. Budget accordingly — and don’t buy speed for an opening that cycles twice a day.
The decision, in one pass
- High daily cycles + climate/dust control → high-speed door
- Night security for a shopfront or warehouse → rolling shutter
- Fire compartment required by code → fireproof rolling shutter (≥3h)
- Both → many facilities use high-speed doors inside and fire shutters at compartment lines
